FINDWELL IDEAS & ADVICE
What size dining table do I need?
The right dining table is not simply the biggest table that fits. It needs to work with your room, your chairs and the way people move around it every day.
Start with the room, not the number of seats
Before comparing table styles, measure the usable dining area. Include doors, radiators, sideboards and the route people naturally use to move through the room. A table can technically fit on paper and still feel awkward if chairs block a doorway or every meal turns into a squeeze past furniture.
A useful planning starting point is to allow roughly 90 cm between the table edge and a wall or other furniture where the room allows. That gives space for a chair to move back and for someone to pass behind it. Busy walkways and areas beside storage furniture may need more.

Square, round or rectangular?
Square tables can make excellent use of a compact square room and keep everyone visually connected. Round tables remove sharp corners and can make circulation feel easier, particularly in rooms where several routes pass the dining area. Rectangular tables normally make the best use of long rooms and are easier to scale up when you need more surface area.
Shape also changes how visually heavy a table feels. A 180 × 90 cm rectangular table creates a clear centrepiece and strong axis through the room, while a round table softens that geometry. Read our round vs rectangular dining table guide if shape is your main decision.
Do not judge seating from tabletop width alone
The distance between the table legs or the size of a pedestal base can change how many chairs fit comfortably. Two tables with the same overall width can have very different usable seating space. Check the chair width, allow a little breathing room between seats and make sure knees and chair frames are not fighting with the table base.
When an extending table makes sense
An extending table is useful when the room does not need a large footprint every day. The Romanby Stone Extending Dining Table is 150 cm long in its smaller format and extends to 210 cm. That flexibility can be more practical than permanently living with a large table just for occasional family meals or entertaining.
Always measure the room with the table at its fully extended size as well. The extension is only useful if chairs can still move and the main walking routes remain comfortable.
Common sizing mistakes
- Measuring only the tabletop and forgetting the chairs.
- Ignoring a door swing, radiator or sideboard behind the seating position.
- Assuming every chair fits because the table is long enough.
- Choosing for occasional entertaining rather than how the room is used most days.
- Forgetting to measure the delivery route into the room.
