How to style a console table

A console works best when it looks considered but still leaves breathing room. Build the arrangement in layers rather than filling every centimetre of the surface.

Begin with one visual anchor

A mirror or piece of artwork gives the arrangement a centre of gravity. It does not always need to be perfectly centred; an off-centre composition can feel more relaxed, especially on a wider console. What matters is that the wall piece and the furniture read as one arrangement rather than two unrelated objects.

Add height with lighting or foliage

A table lamp is useful because it adds both height and function. Tall foliage or a generous vase can do the same visually. If your anchor is already large and dominant, keep the second tall element simpler so the top does not become top-heavy.

Use fewer objects, but vary their height

Three carefully chosen pieces usually create more impact than a line of small accessories. Mix one taller item, one lower sculptural object and one softer element such as foliage. Grouping objects in different heights creates rhythm while leaving visible surface around them.

Negative space is part of the styling. Leaving an area of the console empty is often what makes the objects you do use feel more deliberate.

Keep everyday clutter out of sight

Hallway consoles often collect keys, post and chargers. A drawer makes a big difference because the surface can stay styled while the practical items remain close by. The Camden Two-Drawer Console and Haldon Three-Drawer Console both provide concealed storage for that reason.

Adjust the styling to the console width

On a 90 cm console, reduce the number of objects rather than shrinking everything. On a 120–130 cm console, you can create a broader composition with a lamp on one side and a lower group on the other. A wider console does not need to be filled end to end.

Repeat materials from the rest of the room

If the room already uses black metal, warm wood, stone or linen, bring one or two of those materials onto the console. Repetition makes the styling feel connected to the wider room instead of looking like a standalone display.
